Given the unprecedented financial uncertainty and critical role of staff in delivering safe and effective care, a new focus on human capital is essential. Labor represents <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aha.org\/costsofcaring\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">55-60% of total hospital operating expenses<\/a> and appropriate staffing is <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jama\/fullarticle\/195438#:~:text=Results%20After%20adjusting%20for%20patient,OR%2C%201.07%3B%2095%25%20CI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">linked directly to patient outcomes<\/a>, so optimizing this spend without compromising care is paramount. Although improved from 2022 lows, post-COVID labor shortages remain widespread and hospitals <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aha.org\/aha-center-health-innovation-market-scan\/2024-09-10-5-health-care-workforce-shortage-takeaways-2028#:~:text=1%20%7C%20Expect%20a%20shortage%20of,to%20care%2C%20the%20report%20states.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">can expect a shortage of at least 100,000 workers<\/a> by 2028 <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ucla.edu\/stories\/us-facing-critical-hospital-bed-shortage-by-2032-ucla-research-suggests\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">driving a significant inpatient bed shortage by 2032<\/a> that will constrain revenue. Potential Medicaid cuts of up to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/medicaid\/issue-brief\/eliminating-the-medicaid-expansion-federal-match-rate-state-by-state-estimates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$1.5 trillion<\/a> are on the horizon when considering proposed changes to federal matching funds, provider tax reductions or eliminations, and other cuts. This unprecedented funding shift will drastically impact state governments, triggering ripple effects that will negatively impact health system reimbursement and margins, making safe and effective care more difficult to provide. As a former health system CEO with a career-long focus on quality, I understand how difficult it can be to effectively manage costs while maintaining or improving quality.
