Nurses and health professionals across the country have found opportunities through Medely to build lives that allow them to pursue their dreams, find financial stability, explore different facilities, and flourish in their careers.

Fannie Hood, a certified surgical technologist, knew she needed a change. Like many healthcare professionals looking for more balance in their lives, she turned to Medely and finally found the flexibility she’d been searching for. Through a more flexible schedule, she’s been able to build a career that works for her, allowing her the freedom to achieve her goals on her terms.

Traveling certified surgical technologist

Fannie’s journey in traveling started long before she started picking up shifts with Medely. She’s a seasoned traveler with about 16 years of experience. After being introduced to the world of traveling by a classmate, she knew that was something she wanted to pursue. “Somebody in my class came in, and he had just come back from California,” Fannie shared. “He told us, ‘surgical techs are traveling now.’ At first, it was a big thing for nurses, so as allieds broke into it, he came to our class and told us about it,” recalls Hood.

Fannie was committed to exploring different locations and seeking new adventures in her professional life, making her the perfect candidate for trying out this new, unexplored lifestyle. As she worked as a traveling certified surgical technologist, she was able to explore the cities she wanted without having to worry about how to finance her travels; her expenses were covered by picking up contracts at facilities across the country. She was ahead of the curve, jumping into travel healthcare before it gained momentum, and paved the way for a career that balanced stability with freedom

The shift to per diem with Medely

About five years ago, Fannie discovered Medely during a travel contract and was drawn to picking up per diem shifts as a way to supplement her income in between travel assignments. I had a co-traveler. She was using Medely and told me about how the per diem shifts work, and I signed up in Maryland,” Fannie shared. “I’ve done it everywhere. I think I signed up in Maryland, and I did a bunch of shifts there. I’ve done it in California, and I’ve done it recently in Portland.”

“With Medely, it really is just go do the job and go home. It’s so great for independent contractors.”

Since she had been traveling for so long, Fannie was comfortable hopping into facilities with little onboarding and thrived on the ability to pick up shifts on her schedule. With Medely, she was able to find even more independence in her career as she was able to supplement her time in between contracts with per diem shifts. “I use it when I don’t want to do a full contract, and I still want to keep my schedule. I use it when I’m coming into a new place because my husband travels, too,” Fannie shared. “If I don’t have a contract, I can come in and do Medely while he’s getting his contract under wraps.” And since Medely has per diem markets across the country, she was able to find shifts wherever she was at the time. “I like the freedom, and I like that it’s independent. You can create your own schedule,” Fannie shared.

Fannie’s favorite Medely features

Since Fannie has been with Medely for the past five years, she’s seen the company go through a lot of growth, ultimately creating an even better platform for nurses and health professionals. I’ve been with it for five years and Medely has really just gotten bigger and better.” As Medely has expanded, a few key features stand out to her.

Easy-to-use mobile app

One of the biggest innovations that Medely has provided over the past few years was the launch of the mobile app. “When the app came out, that was very, very helpful,” Fannie shared. Medely’s mobile app provides nurses and health professionals an extra layer of flexibility in finding shifts that work for them. They can search for shifts in their area, update their information and credentials, manage earnings, clock in and out for shifts, and more. With everything in one centralized location directly accessible through a mobile app, we’ve removed extra barriers from having to log in through a computer or web browser, simplifying the entire process of booking and finding shifts through Medely.

Quick pay

Since she started using Medely, Fannie was impressed by how quickly she got paid. With multiple weekly payouts, she’s been able to build her finances and manage her money on her terms. “You can just go in and do shifts according to what you want to get paid or how long you want to work, and then you’ll just get the money. That’s just easy peasy,” Fannie shared. Since Fannie picks up per diem shifts at different facilities, quick access to her earnings matters. She wants to see her pay hit as soon as possible because fast access to her earnings helps her stay financially steady, even when shifts may vary.

Flexible schedule to pursue personal passions

With Medely, Fannie is able to pick up shifts when she wants, allowing her to create a schedule that works for her. With a more flexible schedule, she is able to carve out time to pursue one of her biggest passions–writing a book. “When I became a traveler, it was cool to be able to pick different places to live and go and then do it so long,” Fannie shared. “I had so many experiences I wrote a book about it.” Without a flexible schedule and the experiences she had in her 16 years of being a traveler, she wouldn’t have been able to find the time or passion for writing a book.
